Vinyl Fence Installation in Reno

Reno Solid Fence sends vinyl fence requests to independent fence contractors licensed in Nevada who work across Reno and Sparks. Vinyl, or PVC, trades a higher upfront price for a fence you never paint, which is a real advantage where sun and freezing nights wear out wood finishes fast.

How a vinyl fence goes together

Vinyl fences are a system: hollow posts routed to take rails, panels or pickets that lock into the rails, and caps on top. The posts are set in concrete, and on tall privacy runs, gate posts and corners many installers add an aluminum or galvanized steel insert or fill the post with concrete. Because the pieces are factory-made, a straight run goes up quickly; slopes, odd angles and short sections take more labor.

Styles

  • Solid privacy, 6 ft: tongue-and-groove boards, the most popular backyard choice.
  • Semi-private: lattice or spaced-picket tops over a solid lower section, which let some wind through.
  • Picket: 3 to 4 ft, the classic front-yard fence; fits under Reno's 4-foot front-yard limit.
  • Rail (post-and-rail): two or three rails for pastures and property lines.

Wind is the design load

Washoe County's building design criteria use wind speeds of 120 mph and more for ordinary structures, and the afternoon Washoe Zephyr can blow daily in summer. A solid 6-foot vinyl panel has no gaps to relieve pressure, so the fence fails at the weakest post or the rail pockets. Ask for post spacing, post wall thickness, whether there is a metal insert, and how deep posts go below the 24-inch frost line.

Vinyl fence products vary in wall thickness, profile and reinforcement. When two quotes look far apart, compare the product line, post size and warranty terms before the price.

Cold-weather and sun notes

PVC gets stiffer in the cold, and a hard hit from a snowblower, a thrown rock or a car door on a January morning can crack a panel that would flex in summer. Reno sees about 1.9 nights a year below 10°F and many more below freezing. Good-quality vinyl includes UV inhibitors to slow yellowing and chalking in high-elevation sun. Ask what the manufacturer's warranty covers and whether colors other than white carry the same terms.

Rules for vinyl fences

Material does not change height limits. In the City of Reno, 4 feet in the required front yard and 6 feet on side and rear lines, with a permit for fence construction. In Sparks, front setbacks are limited to 3 feet, or 4 feet if the fence is at least 50 percent open, which favors a spaced picket over a solid panel. Vinyl is combustible, so in Washoe County's wildland-urban interface zones the last 5 feet next to a building need a noncombustible section.

What vinyl costs

National guides put 6-foot vinyl privacy fence at about $30–$60 per linear foot installed, more than most wood and less than most ornamental steel. Gates, corners and slopes add cost. See the Reno fence cost guide for how quotes are built.

FAQ

Vinyl Fencing: Common Questions

Does vinyl fence hold up to Reno wind?

It can, if posts are spaced, reinforced and set deep enough. Ask about metal inserts and concrete at gate and corner posts.

Does vinyl crack in the cold?

Vinyl is more brittle below freezing, so impacts in winter are the usual cause of cracks. Panels can be replaced individually.

Is vinyl allowed in my front yard?

Yes, within the height limit: 4 feet in Reno's required front yard and 3 feet in Sparks front setbacks, or 4 feet if the fence is at least half open.
