Reno Solid Fence connects Verdi homeowners with independent fence contractors licensed by the NSCB. Verdi sits on Nevada's western edge against the California line, where the Truckee River leaves the Sierra and Interstate 80 climbs toward Donner Pass, and its fences deal with more snow, more fire risk and more river than most of the metro.

A railroad town at the state line
Verdi began as O'Neil's Crossing, after a bridge built over the Truckee in 1860. In 1868 Central Pacific founder Charles Crocker named it for the composer Giuseppe Verdi by drawing a slip of paper from a hat; locals say VUR-dye. Two years later, on November 4, 1870, robbers stopped a train near town and took about $41,000 in gold and silver. The census place had 1,396 residents in 2020 on about 3.5 square miles, with Verdi, California directly across the line and the Verdi Range above.
Fence rules for Verdi
Unincorporated Verdi follows Washoe County: up to 4½ feet within the front setback and 6 feet elsewhere, with 18-inch limits in corner and driveway visibility triangles. The Verdi census area stretches east to its Lawton exclave, which is surrounded by the City of Reno, and inside Reno city limits every fence needs a permit and the front-yard limit is 4 feet. Check which jurisdiction your parcel is in first.
Near the Truckee River, Washoe County does not allow fences within the floodway; in the floodplain, open fencing like split rail that does not block water may be approved by the County Engineer.
Snow, slope and fire
Verdi sits higher and closer to the Sierra than the valley floor, and Reno's climate records note that the western foothills get two to three times the valley's snowfall. That means fence posts set well below the 24-inch frost depth, rails and caps that can carry snow, and gates that will still swing when drifts build. On sloped lots, fences step or rack with the grade.
Lots against the brush and pine of the Sierra edge can fall in Washoe County's higher wildland-urban interface ratings. Washoe County requires any fence within 5 feet of a building to be noncombustible or as fire-resistive as the exterior walls, so a wrought iron or aluminum section at the house is the usual answer. Check your address on the county's EZ Fire-WUI map.
