A preserved boomtown

Virginia City grew from the 1859 discovery of the Comstock Lode into one of the West's great mining centers, peaking at an estimated 25,000 people in the mid-1870s after the Big Bonanza. Mark Twain began his career here. The town was designated a National Historic Landmark District in 1961, and today it is the Storey County seat with 787 residents (2020), on the eastern slope of Mount Davidson along State Route 341, about 24 miles south-east of Reno.

Certificates of Appropriateness

Virginia City, Gold Hill and part of Dayton make up the Comstock Historic District. The Comstock Historic District Commission, a state agency within the State Historic Preservation Office, issues Certificates of Appropriateness for exterior work, new construction, and specifically work affecting fencing, retaining walls, signs and pavement. A decorative fence built on East Washington Street in Virginia City before the owner obtained a certificate drew a stop-work order.

  • Apply to the Commission before ordering materials or booking a contractor's start date.
  • Ask what the application needs and which materials, heights and designs it has approved on similar properties.
  • Then check Storey County's own building and planning requirements.

Building on the mountain

Because the town is built on the eastern slope of Mount Davidson, many lots slope, and fences there step down the grade in short sections or rack to follow it. Gates need room to swing above the downhill side. Rocky ground can mean drilled or core-cut post holes, so ask how the contractor plans to dig. Ornamental steel and simple wood picket designs are worth discussing with the Commission early.
